What are blackheads?
Blackheads are a type of acne, called comedone. Blackheads can be unsightly, flat darkened spots that form when pores become clogged with a mixture of oil and dead skin cells. Blackheads are common at any age and are usually found on the face across the face, on the nose and the chin.
Blackheads when left untreated can cause full blown lesions. Because blackheads are a type of acne its best that they not be picked at for the simple fact they can cause a scar, and sometimes these scars are hard to remove.
What are blackheads: Causes
Causes of blackheads are simple. When skin is oily, dirty and not clean this mixture of bacteria enters the pores and clogs the pore.
The pore gets so full of the bacteria that it causes the skin underneath not to be able to breathe and then a white bump appears. When skin is clear and clean of bacteria the pores are able to breathe meaning the pores are getting air and not clogged, so the skin is healthy, clean and clear. In other words keep skin clean, no blackheads. If skin is dirty beware of the blackheads.
What are blackheads: Medications
There are many over the counter acne medications that promise to keep skin clean, and keep pores clean, however blackheads are hard to prevent because the skin is constantly producing a hormone called sebum.
Depending on the hormones and the oil the skin produces blackheads may or may not be such a problem, but if the hormones are producing a lot of oil and the oil is just sitting on the skin, pores will clog and blackheads will be the least of your problems.
There are different acne medications over the counter now, most treat blackheads, some do not. The primary reason you would want to invest in a acne medication is because the ones that do treat blackheads, will treat it well keeping it from becoming a full fledge lesion.
Once a lesion forms it’s difficult to treat, better yet remove. Anything with salicyclic acid or alpha hydroxy acids works well because they remove surface oils and dirt that keep the pores clean and fresh. This way the pores get air and no pimple should form.
Also, available now is what is called the blackhead strip which lay across the skin and draw debris, and oil from the skin along with dead skin cells. These strips are sold over the counter and they work quite well.
